Theories of Architecture on Genius Loci

Genius Loci ( Towards a phenomenology of Architecture ) by Christian Norberg-Schulz

The phenomenon of place can be in the form of tangible and non-tangible. Concrete term of environment is place, which are the act and occurrences take place or evidently an integral part of existence. Heidegger view towards phenomenology emphasizes on comparison between the outside and inside; nature versus man-made; earth and sky and etc.

The structure of place is the landscape or settlement. Space and 3d organization of elements that creates the character to an atmosphere which form the node, landmark, edge, district and landmark. (Kevin Lynch’s)

Heidegeer’s statement towards this approach that a space receives their identity from locations. Not solely standalone isolated space. Primary aspect inside – outside (extension & enclosure) and figure – ground relationship. Followed by the categorization property of space are in centralization, direction & rhythm. Topological and correspond to principle of organization. Besides, Heidegeer also emphasize that a dwelling has to be “protective”, an office to be “practical” and church to be “solemn” as the identity to the place.

There’re three ways of man-made relate to nature, 3 relationships imply and gather experience to create, settling and dwelling. First to make natural structure more precise to Visualize understanding of nature. Complete the given situation by adding what’s lacking and Symbolize understanding of nature

The spirit of place Genius loci, the guardian spirit that give identity of life to people and the place. Modern human believe that science and technology freed them, but this belief has proved illusion which causes pollution and environmental chaos.

Case Study building: The FallingWater by Frank Lloyd Wright

The building, constructed in three levels, is built on a rock on a natural waterfall. Its composition is horizontal although somewhat complex. The vertical axis is defined by the chimney that stands out about the deck. The building grows from within outwards and is spreading according t the needs of its residents. Therefore, it can be amended, as in the organic architecture building is conceived as a living thing and that can change.

The natural beauty surrounding Fallingwater is intimately connected to the understanding and appreciation of the house itself. The genius of Frank Lloyd Wright to physically and spiritually embrace the natural world is captured in the daring and innovative architecture set among the forest landscape of Bear Run.
